Our Mission
Overcome Summer Reading Loss
The Buis Book Foundation is pleased to announce that we are partnering with Britt Elementary School in Gwinnett County to give free books to Britt’s Kindergarten, 1st and 2nd graders beginning in May, 2025. The Foundation will return in December to bring more books for a giveaway. Reading well is the key to academic success, and The Buis Book Foundation is excited to expand to another school.
On December 18, 2024, for our fifth book giveaway at Kimberly Elementary School, The Buis Book Foundation gave every student seven books to read over the winter holidays. The Foundation will return in May, 2025 to give each student seven additional books to read over the summer.
In September and November, 2024, the Foundation also partnered with Hands On Atlanta to give books to the students at Usher-Collier Elementary School and Flat Shoals Elementary School.
The Foundation has raised thousands of dollars and donated thousands of books to raise the reading level of elementary students. Our mission is to increase literacy at the elementary level.
Please consider donating so we can expand to more schools
Congratulations to Kimberly Elementary School’s fourth and fifth graders for their significant gains on the 2024 Georgia Milestone test. Kimberly’s staff works extremely hard, and we believe the Buis Book Foundation plays a positive role with the donation of thousands of books to the students as well as the donation of hundreds of high-interest graphic novels to the library. The third grade scores demonstrated that there is still work to do. Our goal is that over the next few years, Kimberly will see an even greater consistent gain as rising students continue to take the Milestones after receiving several years of books from The Buis Book Foundation. Most importantly, Kimberly’s students will become better readers with each passing year.
Several items of note from the tables below: for the first time, Kimberly’s fourth, and fifth grades both scored higher than the average of all APS Title I schools. The fourth grade scored 11.6% higher than the previous year while the fifth grade scored 8.7% higher than the previous year.
Improving students’ literacy scores is a long-term ambition, but the Kimberly students are demonstrating that it can be done. Reading well is the key to academic success.

If we want children to read more, we must provide them with books they want to read.
